February 21st 2009
Saturday February 21st 2009 was the first anniversary of Katie's passing and her family faced the difficult decision of how to spend the day.
We know what Katie would have wanted us to do so after visiting St Mary's Church in Woodham Ferrers for a moments contemplation off we headed to the shops at Lakeside. It is true to say that the girls in the party seemed more keen than the boys!
On arrival, and before the shopping began in earnest, there came the first ubiquitous coffee stop. Plans were then put in place as to who would shop with who and for how long. The first "segment" was to last an hour before we would all meet back in the furniture department of Marks and Spencers. The furniture department of course had nice comfy sofas for us all to try out!!
There was a vicious rumour that Katie's stepdad had sneaked back to the car for a power nap but this was vehemently denied. Furthermore Katie's Dad was concerned when it was apparent that the second "segment" would mean he would be left alone with Katie's half brothers Toby and Charlie.
Some of the boys in the party who think an hour constitutes a year's shopping were then horrified to hear that "segment 2" would last for 1 1/2 hours! At least the next meeting point was the bed dapartment at Debenhams.
Still, everyone managed to buy something, except Katie's Dad who was more interested in the goings on up the A12 in the Colchester v Southend game, and by 5 o'clock after much walking an exhausted party headed off to dinner at a local establishment. Cannot advertise which one but think of loud red and white striped shirted waiters and waitresses and you might know who we mean.
An enjoyable and tiring day that Katie would have loved. The Lakeside party were Katie's Mum, stepdad, Dad, Aunties Hazel and Penny, Alison, Toby and Charlie.
