Fans of Southend United and Katie
Football fans often get a bad name, Southend supporters show this is not always the case....
When Katie died we put a note on the message board of Shrimperzone (A forum for fans of Southend United) as we knew that would be way of telling Southend fans who knew of Katie the news.
Little did I know the amazing response there would be from the zoners Furthermore, within hours, donations for Little Haven in memory of Katie were coming in from fans all over the country and soon £300 was raised.
Ken Jarvis from Shrimperzone presented me with the cheque at the Spread Eagle before the Nottingham Forest game and the money was one of the earliest donations into the Friends of Katie fund.
My sister adapted my "Hawkwell Blues" flag Katie had helped make with a heart and the Little Haven logo and thanks to another Shrimperzone member, “GNH”, the flag was prominent behind the goal at Roots Hall for the home game against Luton Town.
This was by no means the end of Shrimperzone's amazing involvement in Friends of Katie. In October, after Southend had beaten Leeds United 1-0, Paul Cox (aka MK Shrimper) and Gareth Boggis (aka ToEllandback) following a bet began raising money in Katie's memory for Little Haven. Their initial target was a couple of hundred pounds but incredibly as donations began to come in the target went up and it currently stands at an amazing £1,500.
The full story of Toellandback’s bet will be on the website very soon.
