New Teenage Beds at Little Haven
Thanks to monies raised by Friends of Katie two extra long teenage beds have been installed at Little Havens. Please read more about where some of your money has gone.
During Katie's stays at Little Haven is became evident that the special clinical beds she used were not long enough for her, when she passed away Katie was 6 foot tall.
When we started raising money in Katie's memory Jo, katie's Mum, suggested to the Head of Care at the hospice that the money could go towards special extra long beds. Obviously Little Haven did not know the amazing amount we would raise (and continue to do so) but the first part of the fund was earmarked for the beds.
The beds are eight inches longer than the hospice’s average bed which is especially important for taller children who spend any length of time in them, enabling them to stretch out. These beds were much needed by Little Havens as it cares for teenagers up the age of 19 years-old and during a planned “teenage weekend,” it means there are more of these beds available.
The beds have a homely appearance rather than looking like a hospital version. However, they have all the practicality and function of an electrical clinical bed. The full length retractable rails provide extra safety and the position of the bed can be controlled by either the carer or the child, giving them independence if they require it. They can be moved to either a sitting or lying position – whatever is most comfortable for the child at that time.
We are delighted to say that the beds are now in place at a cost of £4,065 which includes accessories and battery packs. It is wonderful to know that Katie's remarkable legacy is being felt at a place that means so much to us.
